Since 2009, CHAPS (Community Health Africa: A Poverty Solution) has worked to support grassroots HIV/AIDS education projects in rural nomadic communities in Northern Kenya. The programs that CHAPS serves go beyond the fixed clinics through use of mobile medical units, sometimes transported by camel trains and 4 wheel drive vehicles. This project will fund HIV/AIDS counselors and testers working in the Laikipia, Samburuland and Turkana regions that are not served by the Kenyan government and experience an continued rise in infections, particularly among those ages 15-24, due to lack of education and high-risk sexual practices, such as polygamy and multiple mistresses. The illiteracy rate in areas served is as high as 75%.
